Packing a plastic free lunchbox can seem overwhelming, especially when everything at the supermarket seems to come in a packet - but here are some quick and easy tips to pack a fun and colourful lunchbox that your child will love!
1. INCORPORATE COLOUR THROUGH FRUIT AND VEGES
Kids love to eat with their eyes; they love a lot of colour. An easy way to incorporate this is with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables! Think carrots and capsicum, strawberries, kiwifruit, grapes, cherry tomatoes, or any other fresh fruit & veges your child will eat - all super colorful and healthy, and makes a lunchbox look fun & inviting.
2. THINK ABOUT CHILD SIZED PIECES
Kids love fun sized pieces, and it also makes it quicker for them to eat before they rush off to play! Instead of putting a whole piece of fruit/vegetable in, think about cutting carrots and capsicum into strips, and any other fruits & veges into little pieces they can pick up and eat quickly. Blueberries, raspberries, grapes etc are already the perfect snack size!
3. PREPARE FRUIT & VEGES IN ADVANCE
We know your time is precious and you don't want to spend time cutting up large pieces of fruit every single morning - so buy a whole pineapple or watermelon, chop this up at the start of week, and pop into an container ready to go in the fridge. This saves money, because you are not paying more for pre-sliced fruit, saves plastic, because the pre-sliced fruit generally comes wrapped in plastic, and saves time, because the pieces are ready to go! Plus, you can use old recycled jars to store it in - think pasta jars, coconut oil jars, etc.
4. PORTION SNACKS YOURSELF
Instead of buying individual-sized packets of crackers, popcorn, or whatever other snacks, buy a large back and portion it out yourself! You can buy reusable containers and put enough in there for the day, and pop that into your child's lunchbox. Again, this saves money, because the larger packs are more economical, and saves plastic.
