At EcoMe, we want to make the best choices for the environment and our consumers and make being eco-friendly affordable for everyone. However, making eco-friendly affordable for all, does not mean compromising on our values.
Did you know all cotton produce bags are not created equal?
Organic consumers.org describes non-organic cotton as “the dirtiest crop in the world” because its sprayed with some of the worst pesticides about, such as aldicarb, paraquat, and glyphosate, all highly toxic and the latter listed as a probable human carcinogen by the World Health Organisation. Would you want those anywhere near your bedding, your clothing, or your food? No! Neither would we. This is why we chose only 100% certified organic cotton for our produce bags.
The organic cotton used in our bags is unbleached, undyed and grown from only non-genetically modified seeds without the use of toxic synthetic chemicals, fertilisers or pesticides.
While you’re shopping and filling our bags with all those fresh fruits and vegetables you can rest assured they’re not coming into contact with any nasty toxins.
Another important reason for us in using only 100% certified organic cotton in our bags was their ‘end of life’ use.
Our organic cotton produce bags will last many years with regular use and we believe in washing, repairing and reusing items for as long as possible, but eventually they will come to the end of their natural life and what then? The last thing we want to do is add to the landfill. That is why we chose to use organic cotton that is 100% compostable in your home compost bin – just cut them up, the smaller the better, and evenly distribute in your compost. They will naturally break down over time. Organic cotton is actually a great thing to add to your compost bin as it retains moisture in the soil. Alternatively, you can place them in your green bin.
When non-organic cotton degrades, the toxins seep back into the ground harming the surrounding environment and adding to the toxic chemical load in the earth.
Check out our 100% organic produce bags here. Our bags come in a pack of six, in a range of sizes. They have the tare weight printed on the side of each bag so the check out operator can easily minus the bag weight from your produce.
